October is National Eczema Month

Video from the National Eczema Association

Did you know that October is eczema month? This is because eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, often flares when the weather gets cooler.

Cool weather leads to dry skin which lowers the irritancy threshold of the skin and leads to more inflammation. You can help prevent this by moisturizing every day and using topical steroids, under the care of your doctor, when needed.

Sometimes oral medications can also help. We also have a phototherapy unit at Texas Dermatology and Laser Specialists. Phototherapy helps significantly with redness and itching. Give us a call at 210-829-5180 if you would like more information about phototherapy or have questions regarding eczema.
