SKIN BIOPSY PROCEDURES

SKIN BIOPSY PROCEDURES

The dermatologists at Texas Dermatology and Laser Specialists perform skin biopsies for skin tumors and skin growths.

WHAT IS A SKIN BIOPSY?

Skin biopsies are performed for diagnosing certain types of skin conditions. During a biopsy, a surgeon removes skin cells, a mole, skin lesion, or some other type of growth. The removed tissues are preserved for microscopic examination, to detect any signs of cancerous tumors. Depending the skin lesion, different types of biopsies may be performed.

TYPES OF BIOPSIES

Punch Biopsy – a quick biopsy method that involves of the use of a round knife that is used to make a small cut. Depending on the size, a punch biopsy wound does not always require stitches.

Shave Biopsy – performed for removing only the top layers of the skin, using a scalpel or a blade. A shave biopsy removes a small part of a lesion, and should not require stitches.

Incisional Biopsy – removes a large piece of skin when required for a diagnosis. For an incisional biopsy, a scalpel blade is used. Stitches are usually needed.

BIOPSY PROCEDURES

Our experienced dermatologists perform biopsy procedures using a local anesthetic to numb the area and reduce discomfort. For a skin biopsy, examination or other dermatological services, call or email us to make an appointment.
