About Skin Cancer
Skin cancer is a prevalent type of cancer that develops from skin cells that are growing abnormally. Most skin cancers form on areas of the body that are frequently exposed to the sun, as harmful UV rays cause damage to the skin. Fortunately the success rate for curing skin cancer is extremely high if it is detected early enough.
Types of Skin Cancer
Basal Cell Carcinoma – the most common form of skin cancer, appears as a small, pink or red spot that is round and raised. Often found on the hands, neck or head, a basal cell carcinoma sore may become crusty and bleed.
Squamous Cell Carcinoma – a type of skin cancer that grows slowly, often spreading to other parts of the body. Squamous cell carcinoma appears as a growth that is pink, raised and scaly.
Malignant Melanoma – the rarest form of skin cancer, melanoma is also the most serious type. It can appear as a mole, bump or other type of skin growth, and may spread to any part of the body. Malignant melanoma includes some moles that change color, shape or size.
Actinic Keratosis – a precancerous skin disease that can progress to squamous cell carcinoma. Actinic Keratosis is characterized by a rough and scaly patch of skin.
